I’ve been served a Deportation Liability Questionnaire, what should I do?

A Deportation Liability Questionnaire (DLQ) is a formal document issued by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) to individuals who are believed to have breached their visa conditions, or whose circumstances have changed in a way that makes them ineligible for their visa. The DLQ is used by INZ to gather information about the person's situation and to assess whether they may be liable for deportation.

If you receive a DLQ, it means that INZ is considering taking action to deport you from New Zealand. The DLQ will ask you to provide detailed information about your current situation, including your immigration status, employment, health, financial background and family circumstances. You will also be asked to provide information about any criminal convictions or charges you may be facing and any previous immigration issues.

It is important to take the DLQ seriously and respond to it promptly, accurately, and provide as much information as possible. Failure to do so may result in you being liable for deportation from New Zealand. If you find yourself in this position, it is also important to seek legal advice from an experienced immigration lawyer or adviser to help you understand your options and to ensure that you provide accurate and complete information and documents in your response.

Once INZ receives your response to the DLQ, they will review the information and make a decision about whether to take further action, such as issuing a Deportation Liability Notice (DLN). If a DLN is issued, the delegated decision maker may either suspend your deportation liability or proceed with deportation proceedings.

It is important to note that a DLQ and the possibility of deportation can be a stressful and challenging experience. You should seek advice from an experienced immigration lawyer to assist you with this process. Contact Michelle today.
